Alphen aan den Rijn begins signage for zero-emission zone

The municipality of Alphen aan den Rijn has begun installing warning and traffic signs to signal the upcoming zero-emission zone for commercial vehicles and trucks. The new regulations are scheduled to take effect on January 1, 2027, targeting business vans and freight vehicles within the city center and surrounding areas. Passenger cars are not subject to these specific rules.

To assist with the transition, the municipality is implementing a six-month warning period. While the access rules change on January 1, 2027, fines will not be issued until July 1, 2027. Alderman Relus Breeuwsma stated that the goal of the signage and the ‘Mag jouw bus straks nog naar je klus?’ campaign is to ensure all entrepreneurs are clearly informed about the changes, vehicle requirements, and available exemptions.

Business owners can currently use the municipal website to check their vehicle registration numbers to determine if their fleet will meet the new requirements or if they qualify for transitional arrangements and exemptions.
