Alphen aan den Rijn council splits over budget plan and new 2050 foundation

On July 9, the Alphen aan den Rijn municipal council debated the Kadernota 2027 and the spring budget. Forum for Democracy (FVD) voted against both items, arguing that the municipality must first secure basic services such as information for residents, safe public spaces, good accessibility, and affordable housing. The party warned that the upcoming Wet versterking regie volkshuisvesting would reduce municipal flexibility in housing policy.

Opposition parties—including the SP, FVD, Party for the Animals and RijnGouweLokaal—criticised the recent establishment of Stichting Alphen 2050, a €200,000 foundation intended to develop a long‑term vision for the city. They claimed the council could handle the work internally and accused the foundation of being a political vehicle, especially after former alderman Gerard van As was appointed strategic adviser. Mayor Erik van Heijningen defended the initiative, saying it will speed up knowledge‑gathering and that the council will retain final authority over its recommendations.
