Alphen aan den Rijn dog tax inspections yield significant revenue

A recent dog tax enforcement campaign in Alphen aan den Rijn has resulted in the registration of 635 previously unregistered dogs, generating an estimated minimum of €43,053 in additional revenue for 2026. The inspection, which involved visiting 17,050 addresses between April and June 2026, cost the municipality approximately €20,000, including fees paid to the external firm Legitiem Controle & Inventarisatie and €500 for advertising.

Despite the financial gain, the municipality faces scrutiny regarding the allocation of these funds. While municipal communications previously suggested that dog tax revenues would support specific amenities such as dog walking areas, waste bins, and park maintenance, the local government has clarified that the dog tax is a general tax. Consequently, the proceeds are directed into the municipality’s general funds rather than being earmarked specifically for dog-related facilities.
