The Netherlands is experiencing a sharp surge in break-ins at fire stations, with 50 incidents recorded so far in 2026. This significantly exceeds the totals from 2024 (17 incidents) and 2025 (18 incidents).

Criminals are specifically targeting high-value hydraulic rescue tools, electrical equipment, and batteries. These specialized tools, which can cost up to 30,000 euros each, are used by firefighters to extricate victims from vehicle accidents. Authorities believe these tools are being used by gangs to facilitate other serious crimes, such as jewelry robberies and ATM heists across Europe.

The rise in thefts has prompted a national coordinated response between the police, the public prosecution service, and the fire department. Fire service officials have warned that the thefts jeopardize public safety, as the loss of equipment can render entire emergency units temporarily unable to respond to calls. Measures to improve security, including the installation of cameras and reinforced glass, are being considered, though officials note that equipment must remain easily accessible for rapid deployment during emergencies.
