Alphen aan den Rijn reports rise in serious elderly fall injuries
Data from health insurers, processed by Vektis, shows that 6,045 serious injuries caused by falls were recorded among elderly residents in Alphen aan den Rijn over the last five years. In 2025, 595 serious fall incidents were registered, marking an increase from 565 cases in 2024. Notably, the number of seniors suffering from concussions or brain contusions rose from 205 in 2024 to 230 in 2025.
Nationally, VeiligheidNL reports that an elderly person aged 65 or older enters an emergency room due to a fall every four minutes, totaling approximately 124,000 incidents annually in the Netherlands. Experts attribute the rising trend to ‘double aging,’ where both the total number of elderly citizens and the proportion of the very old are increasing.
To combat this, certain fall prevention measures, such as risk assessments and balance exercises, have been covered by basic health insurance since 2024 for high-risk individuals. Personal accounts, such as that of 87-year-old Tineke Kreugel, highlight the profound impact these incidents have on independence and the subsequent need for rehabilitation.
