Alphen aan den Rijn uncovers 635 unregistered dogs in tax sweep

A large-scale inspection in Alphen aan den Rijn has uncovered 635 unregistered dogs, resulting in a significant increase in municipal tax revenue. Between late April and mid-June, eight inspectors from an external agency visited 17,050 addresses to verify dog tax compliance.

The operation cost the municipality approximately 20,000 euros. Following the discovery, the city expects to receive over 43,000 euros in additional dog tax revenue this year. Officials noted that the actual figure is likely higher, as the current calculation only accounts for the base rate of a first dog, while second and third dogs are subject to higher annual rates.

The municipal government described the enforcement action as effective, citing both the immediate financial gain and the long-term revenue from newly registered pets. The initiative also aims to ensure that a larger group of dog owners contributes their required share to local taxes.
