Lake Constance hits historic low water levels

Lake Constance is experiencing historically low water levels, reaching a record low at the Konstanz gauge of 266 centimeters. This level surpasses the previous record set in 2003. The shortage has left large areas of shores and harbors dry, creating significant challenges for boat owners attempting to launch vessels.

The Bodensee-Schiffsbetriebe (BSB) has issued warnings regarding potential delays and service restrictions for passenger shipping. Experts from the Landesanstalt für Umwelt Baden-Württemberg (LUBW) attribute the crisis to a lack of Alpine meltwater following an extremely snow-poor winter, combined with high evaporation rates and insufficient recent rainfall.

While the low water levels impact maritime activities, tourism in the surrounding regions of Germany, Austria, and Switzerland continues with various seasonal offerings, including vineyard tours and mountain excursions.
