Alpine cattle drives mark seasonal traditions in Germany and Switzerland

Traditional cattle drives are taking place across Alpine regions in September and October, marking the seasonal descent of livestock from mountain pastures to the valleys.

In the Allgäu region of Germany, the 'Viehscheid' tradition involves herders bringing cattle back to the valley, where animals are separated and returned to farmers at designated sites. This centuries-old custom often draws thousands of visitors to local celebrations.

In Switzerland, the descent is celebrated in Gstaad during the Zuglete Festival. During these festivities, cattle are decorated with flowers and large bells, parading to the sounds of alpine trumpets and Tyrolean songs.
