Alpine cattle season and Fleckvieh breed highlighted for 2026

The 2026 calendar for the traditional Viehscheid—seasonal cattle drives—in the Allgäu region and nearby Tirol has been released, detailing dates from 11 September to 16 September for more than thirty towns and villages. Over 30,000 cattle, including cows, sheep, goats and others, will descend from the high alpine pastures, drawing thousands of visitors to each location.

In parallel, Austria’s Fleckvieh cattle breed continues gaining international traction. Nearly three‑quarters of Austria’s 1.8 million cattle are Fleckvieh, and the breed’s genetics are now being exported to more than 50 countries. A TV report on 8 August highlighted breeder Johannes Steiner’s work in the Triestingtal and noted the breed’s strong milk and meat production, durability and friendly temperament, as well as its showcase at the Federal Fleckvieh exhibition held this year in Bergland, Lower Austria.
