Alpine heat spikes spur safety warnings for Matterhorn and Haute‑Savoie trails
Swiss mountain guides warn that the Matterhorn (Cervin) is currently unsafe because unusually high temperatures and a lack of snow have increased rockfall risk. Guide Anjan Truffer of Zermatt said that the melt has removed the stabilising snow layer, making the summit prone to sudden stone drops and urging climbers to refrain from attempting the ascent until conditions improve.
In France, the Haute‑Savoie prefecture issued a similar alert for summer hikers, highlighting that heat‑induced melt can destabilise rock faces and trigger avalanches of stones. Officials also reminded tourists of fire hazards, advising against open flames, proper use of approved stoves, and immediate reporting of any incidents. Both authorities stress heightened vigilance, proper equipment, and adherence to safety guidelines as the Alps experience record warmth.
These advisories reflect growing concerns over climate‑driven mountain hazards across the region.
