Alpine infrastructure undergoes major modernization and repairs

Major infrastructure modernization projects are underway at key Alpine transit points. The Mont-Blanc Tunnel, connecting Chamonix and the Aosta Valley, is undergoing a phased renovation scheduled for completion by 2042. Cogeis SpA is managing a 400-meter section of the modernization, which involves installing a five-centimeter thick surface layer. The project utilizes specialized machinery, including the Vögele Super 1803-5 X, capable of laying material across both lanes simultaneously to minimize disruption to the economically vital tourism sector.

Simultaneously, the Swiss Federal Roads Office (ASTRA) is managing construction on the A21 Grand-Saint-Bernard between Liddes and Bourg-Saint-Pierre. Following delays caused by weather in 2025, work on bridges and retaining walls is set to resume through September 2026. These activities include waterproofing and surfacing on the Palasuit bridge. To facilitate concurrent work sites, single-lane sections have been established, which may result in increased waiting times for travelers, particularly during high-traffic summer weekends.
