Alpine MD Steve Nielsen reflects on 40-year Formula 1 career

Alpine managing director Steve Nielsen has reflected on his four-decade career in Formula 1, which began in 1985. Before entering motorsport, Nielsen served as a police officer in London for 11 months before resigning due to rising crime rates.

Nielsen’s entry into the sport began by driving trucks for a catering company. Over the years, he has held roles with various teams, including Lotus, Tyrrell, Benetton, Honda, Renault, Toro Rosso, and Williams. He also served as a sporting director for both Formula 1 and the FIA before being appointed by Flavio Briatore to lead the day-to-day operations at Alpine.

Reflecting on the evolution of the sport, Nielsen noted that Formula 1 has transitioned from a niche European interest with limited marketing and broadcasting to a global sporting behemoth. He also expressed support for the potential return of the Indian Grand Prix, noting that India possesses a fan base of approximately 98 million people.
