Alpine skiers oppose FIS plans for expanded racing calendar

Alpine skiers Emma Aicher and Kira Weidle-Winkelmann have voiced opposition to proposals by the International Ski Federation (FIS) to expand the racing calendar, which includes the possibility of holding annual World Championships.

FIS President Alexander Ospelt has suggested that annual championships could provide financial benefits for athletes and open new markets in countries like China, Japan, and South Korea. The FIS Council is considering hosting championships every year instead of only in odd-numbered years, potentially starting as early as 2028 or 2032.

Athletes have expressed concerns regarding the density of the current schedule. Emma Aicher noted that the calendar is already full from mid-November through March. Kira Weidle-Winkelmann suggested that any expansion would require a redistribution of races, noting a current imbalance where there are more technical races than speed races. She also emphasized the need for more speed events to prevent cancellations.

German national coach Andreas Puelacher also expressed skepticism toward the plans, citing the already heavy workload facing athletes.
