Alpine transit: Toll violations in Austria and new fees in Switzerland

Travelers navigating Alpine routes face evolving toll regulations in Austria and Switzerland. In Austria, the motorway operator ASFINAG reported approximately 540,000 vignette violations on highways and expressways during the 2024 calendar year. For passenger cars and light vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes, a vignette is mandatory, with physical stickers being phased out in favor of a digital-only system by February 2027. Heavy vehicles over 3.5 tonnes are subject to the GO-Maut distance-based toll.

Meanwhile, Switzerland is moving toward implementing a transit fee for vehicles traveling through the country from one neighboring nation to another without a significant stay. This measure, approved by the Swiss National Council and Council of States, aims to reduce road congestion and better manage north-south traffic, particularly for travelers using Swiss routes as an alternative to the Brenner Pass when heading toward Italy. While specific pricing is not yet finalized, reports suggest a potential fee of approximately 21 Swiss francs per transit.
