Alpinestars launches Tech-Air MX airbag system for downhill mountain biking

Alpinestars has released the Tech-Air MX, an autonomous electronic airbag system specifically optimized for downhill mountain biking. While the company has utilized airbag technology in motorsports for 26 years, this new version features a specialized algorithm designed to distinguish between typical downhill movements—such as jumps, drops, and hard compressions—and actual crash situations.

The system utilizes six built-in sensors, including a three-axis accelerometer and a three-axis gyroscope, to monitor rider movement. The controller processes data hundreds of times per second to detect loss of control or instability. Once a crash is detected, the airbag inflates in approximately 32 to 45 milliseconds, providing protection for the shoulders, chest, back, and upper arms.

The Tech-Air MX is available in various sizes and includes five riding modes: Downhill, MX, MX Race, Enduro, and Rally. It features a battery life of up to 30 hours and weighs between 3.14 kg and 3.17 kg. The retail price is set at 599.95 EUR, with replacement cartridges priced at 99.95 EUR.
