Alps movement mapped by researchers as ice age legacy drives uplift

An international research team led by the University of Jena has mapped the deformation and movement of the Alps, revealing that the mountain range is shifting in an uneven manner. According to findings published in the journal Tectonics, the primary driver of this movement is not deep-seated tectonic forces, but rather a delayed response to the end of the last ice age.

Approximately 11,700 years ago, the melting of massive ice sheets removed an enormous weight from the Earth's crust. This process, known as isostatic rebound, causes the mountains to slowly rise as the ground adjusts to the lost load. Researchers, including Gesa Petersen from the Helmholtz Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) in Potsdam, noted a clear correlation between current uplift and areas that were previously glaciated.

The study combined decades of data from seismology, geodesy, historical earthquake records, and fault zone dating to create this comprehensive map of the mountain range's movement.
