Alps summer skiing suspended due to extreme heat

Extreme temperatures and a lack of nighttime freezing have forced the suspension of summer skiing across much of the Alps. The Sifas company announced the closure of the Stelvio Glacier slopes starting August 15, citing safety concerns and inadequate snow quality. While ski activities are suspended indefinitely, cable cars remain operational for hikers.

This trend follows similar closures at the Matterhorn, where Zermatt Bergbahnen suspended activities on the Teodulo glacier in late July. On Mont Blanc, safety risks from potential landslides have led to the closure of certain refuges and the suspension of climbs. The impact of the heatwave extends beyond Italy, affecting glaciers in Switzerland, France, Austria, and Norway, leaving indoor ski slopes as the only remaining option for enthusiasts in Europe.
