ALS imposes nearly 400,000 euro cost on Spanish families

A new report titled ‘Impacto económico de la ELA en España’, commissioned by Fundación Luzón and prepared by the consultancy Fresno, details the severe financial burden of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) on families in Spain.

The study estimates that the total economic cost accumulated by families throughout the course of the disease reaches 397,785 euros. This figure is based on a median life expectancy of four years following diagnosis. The economic impact is calculated through three main components: direct costs for care and support, loss of household labor income, and public system economic benefits.

Labor income loss is a significant factor, with families losing approximately one-third of their previous income in the early stages, a figure that rises to over 80% in advanced stages. The report highlights that women act as the primary caregiver in 73% of cases, often resulting in reduced working hours, leaves of absence, or total abandonment of employment to meet the needs of the patient.
