Alsace cabbage yields drop due to summer heatwaves
Sauerkraut cabbage production in Alsace is facing significant challenges due to summer heatwaves. Farmers are reporting a 20% to 30% drop in yields for the initial harvests, with cabbage heads weighing roughly five kilograms instead of the usual seven to eight kilograms.
Despite the smaller size, producers from the Association pour la valorisation de la choucroute d'Alsace (AVCA) state that the heat has not negatively impacted the taste or typicality of the varieties. However, the extreme temperatures have caused hydric stress, evidenced by plants developing secondary shoots that go to seed.
To combat these conditions, farmers have had to nearly double their water supply. Producers note that while irrigation was once minimal, it has now become a mandatory requirement for the crop due to recurring drought conditions.
