Alsace cultural sector faces employment crisis due to budget cuts

The cultural sector in Alsace is facing a significant crisis as recurring budget cuts from the Ministry of Culture, the Grand Est region, and local authorities threaten the livelihoods of artists and technicians. This financial instability is leading to a scarcity of employment and deteriorating working conditions for 'intermittents du spectacle'—workers who rely on a specific unemployment insurance scheme after completing a minimum of 507 hours of work per year.

In the Grand Est region, music and singing artists are the most represented group, accounting for 32.5% of the sector. Industry representatives, including Aurore Gruel of the National Union of Artistic and Cultural Enterprises (Syndeac), warn that the reduction in contracts and hours is causing a collapse in wages and forcing some professionals to seek career changes.
