Alt Pirineu Natural Park to undergo highest-altitude restoration in Catalonia

The Generalitat will undertake the highest-altitude construction project ever recorded in Catalonia to restore the Sotllo scree slope within the Alt Pirineu Natural Park. The project focuses on the trail connecting the Vallferrera refuge to the Sotllo pass (2,910 meters), which was severely damaged by a major storm last summer.

Since the storm, hikers have been forced onto steeper, less stable paths. The restoration aims to consolidate a single, well-signposted main route to reduce erosion caused by high foot traffic. This is particularly important for protecting the habitat of the Pallars lizard (Iberolacerta aurelioi), an endemic species at risk of extinction, and the Pla de Sotllo wetlands, which are priority habitats of community interest for the European Union.

In addition to environmental protection, the works will improve safety in the high-mountain area by installing wooden walkways and stabilizing specific sections of the itinerary to prevent accidents.
