Alta Banka faces bankruptcy and regulatory sanctions in Serbia and North Macedonia

The financial group Alta Group is facing severe regulatory actions across the Balkans. In Serbia, the National Bank of Serbia (NBS) revoked the operating license of Alta Banka AD Belgrade, the majority owner of Alta Banka AD Bitola, and initiated bankruptcy proceedings on November 3, 2026. Additionally, the NBS imposed a fine of 250 million dinars on Alta Group and revoked its authorization to conduct exchange operations following findings of flagrant violations regarding anti-money laundering and terrorism financing regulations.

In North Macedonia, the National Bank has introduced temporary administration at Alta Banka AD Bitola as of November 1. While the bank is reported to be liquid and highly capitalized, electronic banking services are currently non-functional, and access to branches is restricted for legal entities. Governor Trajko Slaveski stated that there are six interested investors seeking to purchase the bank to ensure the protection of citizen deposits. The government is actively seeking a buyer to avoid a bankruptcy scenario.

Local authorities in Serbia, including the cities of Leskovac and Vranje, have reported significant funds deposited in Alta Banka. Leskovac reported 78 million dinars, while Vranje reported 177 million dinars. The Deposit Insurance Agency has confirmed that payouts for small investors are capped at 20,000 euros in dinar equivalent.
