Alta Daunia Peranzana olive receive EU Protected Designation of Origin status
The European Commission has officially granted the Protected Designation of Origin (DOP) status to the Alta Daunia Peranzana olive variety, following the publication of EU Regulation 2024/1143. This recognition follows a formalization process previously completed by the Italian Ministry of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Forestry.
The achievement is the result of a twelve-year collaborative effort involving agricultural organizations, research centers, and local institutions. The Municipality of Torremaggiore served as the lead municipality for the initiative, hosting key public assessment meetings during the application process.
Key contributors to the project included the Consorzio Oliva Alta Daunia Peranzana, the University of Foggia, and various local producers. The DOP certification is expected to provide enhanced protection against imitations, improve commercial valuation, and create new economic growth opportunities for the olive oil and table olive supply chain in the Alta Daunia region.
