Alta Murgia National Park wildfire destroys 4,000 hectares

A massive wildfire in the Alta Murgia National Park has destroyed an estimated 4,000 hectares of land, including ancient forests, pine groves, and grazing areas. The blaze, which began on August 25, has caused significant environmental damage and loss of biodiversity.

Local agricultural leaders, including Massimiliano Del Core of Confagricoltura Bari-BAT, have praised farmers for using their own equipment and local knowledge to create firebreaks and mitigate the damage. Del Core emphasized the need for more effective and rapid responses during such emergencies.

Political criticism has followed the disaster. The Partito della Rifondazione Comunista has blamed the incident on a lack of prevention, inadequate funding for firefighting services, and a failure by regional and local administrations to maintain forest areas and create firebreaks. Critics also pointed to broader issues regarding climate change policy and the prioritization of military spending over environmental security.
