Altalena shipwreck discovered off Israel coast

The wreckage of the Altalena, an arms ship sunk off the coast of Israel in 1948, has been located at a depth of 503 meters. The discovery, announced on August 24, 2026, has drawn both historical praise and political criticism.

The ship originally departed from Marseille, France, carrying approximately 5,000 rifles, 450 machine guns, and ammunition intended for the Irgun, a right-wing militia led by Menachem Begin. The vessel was sunk following orders from Israel’s first Prime Minister, David Ben-Gurion, during a period of tension as the new state sought to consolidate its military forces.

Israeli officials, including Heritage Minister Amichai Eliyahu and National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, hailed the find as a way to close a painful and formative chapter in the nation's history. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also joined the celebrations, calling the discovery a defining and emotional moment. However, critics have characterized the timing of the announcement as a political maneuver ahead of the consequential parliamentary elections scheduled for October.
