Altalena shipwreck discovered intact off Israel's coast

The wreckage of the Altalena, a ship central to a pivotal moment in Israel’s early history, has been located intact at a depth of 503 meters in the Mediterranean Sea. The discovery, announced by National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir and Heritage Minister Amichai Eliyahu, occurred approximately 20 kilometers off the Israeli coast.

The ship was sunk in June 1948 during the Israeli War of Independence following a violent confrontation between the newly formed Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and the Irgun, a paramilitary group led by Menachem Begin. The dispute centered on the distribution of weapons and military equipment on board, which the government insisted must be under exclusive IDF control to prevent the rise of parallel military forces. The clash resulted in the deaths of 16 Irgun members and three IDF soldiers.

The search operation was conducted by the Marine Mapping Division of the Survey of Israel using advanced sonar and specialized sensors. While the ship was found in good condition, officials noted that its extreme depth makes recovery efforts highly difficult. The Heritage Ministry is currently exploring alternative ways to commemorate the site.
