Altamura Museum's First Floor Reopens with Immersive Exhibition

The National Archaeological Museum in Altamura, Italy, reopened its first floor after a three‑year restoration funded partly by the PNRR and state resources. The new immersive layout, directed scientifically by Dr. Carla Bagnulo and designed by architect Donatella Campanile, showcases artifacts ranging from the Iron Age to the High Middle Ages, including coins, bronzes, jewelry, figurines and painted vases from Altamura, Gravina, Jesce and Toritto.

The exhibition integrates multimedia displays, tactile aids and accessible educational paths. Museum director Ebe Chiara Princigalli and regional museum director Anita Guarnieri highlighted the project as a “new chapter” in preserving Italian cultural heritage. Soprintendente Francesca Romana Paolillo called the new setting “an important milestone.” Plans are already under way to enhance the nearby La Croce archaeological site and to redesign the prehistoric section dedicated to the early settlement of the Alta Murgia.

The reopening, scheduled for 5 August 2026 at 18:00, marks the completion of the first phase of the museum’s modernization.
