Altenburg building collapse triggers evacuations

A vacant multi-family residential building in Altenburg, Germany, collapsed on Wednesday evening, leaving only the exterior shell of the structure standing. The incident, reported around 5:15 PM in Puschkinstraße, involved the collapse of several intermediate ceilings within the building.

Emergency responders, including the fire department, the Technical Relief Agency (THW), and the German Red Cross (DRK), utilized drones and rescue dogs to search the debris. Although there were reports that individuals might regularly occupy the vacant building, no injuries or persons were found in the rubble.

As a precaution due to the risk of further collapse, 13 people from neighboring buildings in Puschkinstraße and Theo-Neubauer-Straße were evacuated. The city provided emergency shelters for those displaced. A structural engineer is scheduled to inspect the site to determine necessary safety measures and how to secure the area. Currently, parts of the sidewalk and a roadway remain closed.
