Altenburg investigates road subsidence on Leipziger Straße

Authorities in Altenburg are investigating the cause of road subsidence on Leipziger Straße. A partial closure of the outbound lane remains in effect between house numbers 23 and 37 to ensure traffic safety.

Visible surface settlements have been observed since early 2025, particularly near a sewer line. Initial investigations, including ground radar measurements and exploratory excavations, suggest a more extensive pattern of damage than previously thought. The city has commissioned expert assessments and is reviewing data regarding local wastewater, drinking water, and gas pipelines, as well as historical construction records.

Further diagnostic steps are planned, including four additional exploratory pits, sounding tests, plate pressure tests, and soil analyses to determine the exact cause and scope of the damage before permanent repairs can be implemented.
