Alternativet debates support for Henrik Frandsen as Folketinget Speaker

The Danish political party Alternativet is reconsidering its support for Henrik Frandsen (M) as the next Speaker of the Folketinget. This decision follows a controversial property transaction involving Frandsen.

Frandsen, who is the intended successor to Søren Gade (V), recently met with Alternativet's group to explain his actions regarding a 2019 land sale. During his time as Mayor of Tønder Municipality, Frandsen requested that municipal officials allow him to convert protected nature back into agricultural land. This maneuver increased the value of his estate, for which he had previously received financial compensation for nature protection.

Alternativet plans to consult with Enhedslisten, another government support party, to determine if they can continue to back Frandsen. While the government may maintain a majority for his appointment without Alternativet's five mandates, losing Enhedslisten's support would jeopardize his ability to become Speaker. The final vote is expected at the opening of the Folketinget on October 6.
