Alternatywy 4 marks 40 years since its premiere
The iconic Polish television series ‘Alternatywy 4’, directed by Stanisław Bareja, marks its 40th anniversary of its premiere. Created by Maciej Rybiński and Janusz Płoński, the series was designed to serve as a microcosm of life in the Polish People's Republic (PRL), depicting a diverse cross-section of society living within a single apartment block.
Filming began in December 1981 but was abruptly halted after only four days due to the imposition of martial law in Poland. Because the content was deemed too critical of the communist system by censors, the completed episodes remained shelved for over three years. The series finally premiered on TVP on September 30, 1986.
