Alto Adige reports high alcohol consumption and health risks

Data from the 2025 Ministry of Health report indicates significant alcohol-related health issues in Alto Adige. In 2024, the region recorded over 1,000 emergency room visits for diagnoses entirely attributable to alcohol, including 717 cases involving men and 293 involving women.

The region shows higher-than-average risky drinking behaviors compared to national Italian statistics. Approximately 29% of the male population and 13.1% of the female population engage in risky consumption, exceeding the national averages of 21.8% and 9.1%, respectively.

Notably, Alto Adige leads the nation in women consuming alcohol outside of meal times, with 46.4% of local women doing so. Binge drinking rates are also elevated, affecting 23% of men and 9.1% of women in the province, compared to national averages of 12.4% and 4.9%.

In response to alcohol-related risks, including road safety concerns, the Italian Red Cross is conducting awareness campaigns. Supported by the Banco Farmaceutico, volunteers have distributed 14,000 alcohol tests to promote prevention and safety among young people.
