Alto High-Speed Rail Project faces opposition from Ontario MPPs

Eleven Progressive Conservative Members of Provincial Parliament from Eastern Ontario issued a joint statement questioning the proposed Alto high‑speed rail project. The MPPs, including David Piccini, Stephane Sarrazin and other rural representatives, said the plan lacks meaningful consultation, raises concerns about its $60‑90 billion cost, and could negatively impact farmland and local communities. They urged that any future rail initiative reflect the priorities of farmers, families and local businesses.

The criticism follows the Ontario government’s decision to reconsider its support for the rail project after the federal government rejected a proposal to expand Toronto’s Billy Bishop Airport. Opposition has grown among municipalities such as Trent Hills, the Alderville band council and residents along the proposed route, while the advocacy group Alt‑no has endorsed the MPPs’ statement.
