Altosano Granjas Carroll wins Smithfield Foods ROI Award for innovation
Altosano Granjas Carroll has received the 2026 ROI Award for Innovation from its parent company, Smithfield Foods. The award was selected from more than 300 global proposals.
The winning project, titled “Transformación en sitio del residuo de SLAT en material base para el mantenimiento de caminos,” focuses on a circular economy initiative. The company recycles concrete slats—slotted flooring used in pig farms to manage waste—by processing them with industrial machinery. This mechanical transformation turns the old concrete into gravel used for road maintenance.
This process reduces the time required for crushing and shredding by 95% and has decreased expenses for conventional road maintenance materials by up to 47%. The recycled material is used to maintain approximately 350 kilometers of dirt roads that serve farms, local communities, and agricultural producers in the Puebla and Veracruz regions of Mexico.
