AlUla becomes first Asian site in LaserSETI astronomical network

The Royal Commission for AlUla has announced the successful installation and operation of two astronomical observation stations at the AlUla Manara site. These stations are part of the global LaserSETI project, making AlUla the first location in Asia to join the network and the fifth operational observatory worldwide.

The LaserSETI network utilizes specialized stations to continuously monitor the sky for transient optical phenomena, such as rare flashes or light changes that may indicate unusual cosmic events or potential laser signals. By integrating AlUla into the network, which already includes sites in California, Hawaii, Arizona, and Puerto Rico, the project expands its geographical coverage to a previously unrepresented region, enhancing the ability to collect and compare global data.

This achievement follows a cooperation agreement signed between the Royal Commission for AlUla and the SETI Institute on August 8, 2024. The project aims to leverage AlUla’s unique natural conditions, specifically its dark skies and low light pollution, to support scientific research, astronomical tourism, and the protection of the region’s natural environment in alignment with Saudi Vision 2030.
