Aluminum foil reflectors improve home Wi‑Fi coverage

Researchers at Dartmouth College designed a low‑cost reflector, called WiPrint, that can be 3‑D printed and coated with aluminum foil. When positioned behind a router, the reflector redirected radio‑frequency signals, boosting Wi‑Fi strength by up to 55 % in targeted rooms while reducing it by as much as 63 % in areas such as streets or neighboring apartments. The system costs roughly $35, offering a cheap alternative to commercial directional antennas.

The technique works because radio waves, like light, reflect off smooth metal surfaces. By shaping a curved foil panel and placing it behind the router, users can concentrate the signal toward desired zones and limit leakage outside the home, enhancing both performance and physical security. Guides recommend cutting a 20‑30 cm sheet of foil, gently curving it, and attaching it to a cardboard backing without covering the device or obstructing ventilation. Tests should be run before and after placement to fine‑tune the angle.

Experts caution that the foil does not increase the ISP’s bandwidth, cannot overcome thick walls or severe interference, and must not touch Ethernet ports or block heat dissipation. For larger homes or persistent coverage gaps, repositioning the router, adding repeaters, or installing a mesh system remains more effective.
