Aluminum food packaging licking poses minimal health risk, experts say

Experts have addressed concerns regarding the health risks of licking food packaging lids, specifically those made of aluminum. While aluminum is a substance found in various everyday items like tea, spices, and chocolate, the primary concern involves long-term accumulation in the body.

Benjamin Schiller from the CVUA research office in Stuttgart explained to the consumer magazine Ökotest that most aluminum packaging includes a thin protective coating to prevent direct contact between food and the metal. A risk of exposure only arises if this protective layer is damaged through scraping with a spoon or licking. However, the amount of aluminum released in such instances is considered too small to pose a significant health risk.
