Alun Wyn Jones joins Ospreys board amid Welsh rugby restructuring

Former Wales and British and Irish Lions captain Alun Wyn Jones has been appointed to the Ospreys board with immediate effect. The move comes at a critical period for the region as it faces uncertainty regarding its professional status.

The Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) has announced plans to reduce the number of professional men’s teams in Wales from four to three by 2028. Under this proposal, the Ospreys and Scarlets are competing for a single license for west Wales, while Cardiff and the Dragons are slated to receive two. The Ospreys have expressed opposition to this plan, advocating for a four-team professional model.

As part of his appointment, Jones has agreed to a specific arrangement regarding his media work: while he will maintain his existing television commitments, he will not provide punditry or analysis specifically for Ospreys matches. Jones, a Swansea native who rose through the Ospreys academy, stated his goal is to use his experience in rugby and business to drive long-term stability and growth for the organization.
