Alvorada man dies after being set on fire while sleeping

David William Souza da Cunha, a 39-year-old man known as ‘Catatau’, has died following a violent attack in Alvorada. The victim, who was experiencing homelessness, was doused in gasoline and set on fire while sleeping near a bus stop in the city center.

According to the Civil Police, the attack occurred during the early hours of the morning and was carried out by an unidentified suspect who had reportedly left a nearby bar. Despite being on fire, the victim managed to run toward help before being assisted by bystanders. He was subsequently transported to Hospital Cristo Redentor in Porto Alegre, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

The case is being investigated as intentional homicide. Authorities are currently analyzing security camera footage and taking statements to identify the perpetrator. One working hypothesis suggests the victim and the attacker may have known each other.
