Alytus teachers threaten strike over stalled negotiations
The Lithuanian Education Workers' Trade Union (LŠDPS) has warned that teachers in Alytus may launch a strike on November 12 due to stalled collective bargaining with the city municipality. The union accuses Alytus Mayor Nerijus Cesiulis of stalling negotiations, failing to adhere to legal requirements, and ignoring critical concerns regarding teacher safety and working conditions.
According to the LŠDPS, negotiations were initiated in February, but the first meeting with the municipality did not occur until July, a five-month delay. The union also reported that a proposal to hold weekly bargaining sessions was rejected by municipal negotiators. The LŠDPS has initiated an investigation into a collective labor dispute regarding interests.
In response, the Alytus City Municipality stated that it only learned of the potential strike through media reports. The municipality expressed regret that the LŠDPS is utilizing methods that could negatively impact children.
