Alzheimer's blood test arrives in Brazil with over 90% precision

A new blood test for diagnosing Alzheimer's disease has arrived in Brazil, following registration by the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa). The test, which identifies the p-tau217 protein, offers a less invasive alternative to traditional methods such as lumbar punctures or PET scans.

Researchers report the test achieves over 90% precision in detecting biomarkers associated with amyloid plaque accumulation. It is currently available at Hospital Moinhos de Vento in Porto Alegre, with a cost of approximately R$ 3,000. The procedure is intended for symptomatic patients aged 50 and older; it is not recommended for asymptomatic screening.

While the technology marks a significant advancement in neurological diagnostics, it is not yet available through the Unified Health System (SUS). The Ministry of Health has stated there is currently no formal request to incorporate the test into the public health network.
