Alzheimer's disease research expands with new clinical trials and diagnostic tools

Global clinical research for Alzheimer's disease has entered an expansion phase, with a registry tracking 158 potential therapeutic agents currently undergoing 192 clinical trials. Eight major Phase 3 trials are expected to provide critical efficacy and safety data by 2026. Research efforts are diversifying into new biological targets and drug repurposing strategies.

In diagnostic advancements, the FDA has cleared Roche’s Elecsys pTau217, a single-biomarker blood test designed to identify amyloid pathology in adults aged 55 and older. Other notable developments include the Fast Track designation for remlifanserin to treat Alzheimer's psychosis and the approval of at-home subcutaneous dosing for lecanemab.

Despite therapeutic progress, market access remains inconsistent. While monoclonal antibody treatments lecanemab (Leqembi) and donanemab (Kisunla) have received European Union marketing authorization, national implementation varies. For instance, in Sweden, regional drug evaluation bodies have recommended that healthcare regions refrain from adopting lecanemab.
