Alzheimer's disease research shows progress in drug safety and early detection

Recent research offers new insights into the management and prediction of Alzheimer's disease. A real-world study conducted by Duke Health involving more than 230 patients found that the safety and efficacy of the FDA-approved drug lecanemab align with previous clinical trial results. The study noted that approximately 80% of patients were able to remain on the therapy for at least one year. While 24.3% of participants developed Amyloid Related Imaging Abnormalities (ARIA)—which involves brain swelling or bleeding—researchers found that most side effects resolve without additional hospitalization when patients are closely monitored.

In a separate development, new research regarding p-tau217 blood tests shows high accuracy in predicting the onset of Alzheimer's. Healthy older adults with high levels of this protein have a one-in-three chance of developing memory impairment within five years and a nearly 80% chance within ten years. Combined with the availability of at-home versions of certain therapies, medical experts suggest these advancements could significantly improve early intervention and patient access, particularly in underserved rural areas.
