Alzheimer's disease awareness grows in Turkey amid rising health risks
On World Alzheimer's Day, medical experts and local authorities in Turkey highlighted the growing public health challenge posed by Alzheimer's and dementia. With approximately 700,000 people currently living with these conditions in Turkey, experts warn that the number could increase two to two-and-a-half times by 2050 due to an aging population.
Medical professionals emphasized that while age is an unchangeable risk factor, many others are manageable through lifestyle changes. Key preventative measures include healthy nutrition, regular physical activity—such as at least 150 minutes of brisk walking per week—adequate sleep, and maintaining social connections. Experts noted that Alzheimer's is not merely about forgetfulness but is a progressive neurodegenerative disease involving the buildup of beta-amyloid plaques and tau proteins.
Various municipalities across Turkey, including those in Manisa, Konya, Kahramanmaraş, and İzmir, organized awareness events, seminars, and exercise programs. These initiatives focused on early diagnosis and the importance of recognizing symptoms like repeating questions, losing track of daily tasks, or disorientation. Additionally, several cities have established specialized centers to provide cognitive support, social activities, and respite for caregivers to improve the quality of life for both patients and their families.
