Alzheimer's prevention: Modifiable risk factors could reduce dementia cases by 45%

Scientific evidence suggests that nearly half of Alzheimer's and dementia cases could be prevented or delayed by addressing specific modifiable risk factors. According to the Lancet Commission and guidelines from the World Health Organization, acting on 14 risk factors—such as hearing and vision loss, high cholesterol, depression, social isolation, pollution, low education, and physical inactivity—could reduce risk by up to 45%.

In Ecuador, the Fundación TASE estimates that over 100,000 people are living with Alzheimer's or other forms of dementia. The condition disproportionately affects women, who account for 68% of deaths related to these dementias and perform 70% of caregiving duties.

Experts recommend several lifestyle habits to support cognitive health, including regular physical activity like walking or swimming, and maintaining a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains while limiting refined sugars and fats. Addressing these factors requires a collective effort involving public policy, healthcare systems, and individual lifestyle changes.
