Alzheimer’s disease research advances early detection and treatment

Recent scientific research has identified several new pathways and methods for the early detection and potential management of Alzheimer’s disease.

Studies indicate that earlier menopause in women is associated with faster cognitive decline, earlier Alzheimer’s onset, and increased white matter hyperintensity accumulation. Additionally, researchers are exploring non-invasive diagnostic tools, such as high-density electroencephalograms (EEG) to detect brain wave changes years before symptoms appear, and blood tests that measure amyloid-beta proteins, which the FDA has recently authorized for certain uses.

Structural brain changes are also proving critical; MRI scans showing brain atrophy may serve as a predictor for disease progression. On the therapeutic front, a study involving lactate infusion in older adults showed improvements in global cognition and a reduction in several Alzheimer’s fluid biomarkers, including pTau217 and NfL. Other experimental research, including nanoparticle therapy and novel molecules, has demonstrated success in reversing memory loss in mouse models.
