Alzheimer's research focuses on oleic acid levels and music therapy
New research is exploring diverse approaches to understanding and managing Alzheimer's disease, ranging from biological markers to therapeutic interventions.
A study published in Scientific Reports by researchers from the Universitat de Lleida and Hospital Universitari Santa Maria indicates that higher concentrations of oleic acid in blood plasma are associated with a slower progression of Alzheimer's. The study, which analyzed cerebrospinal fluid and plasma samples, noted significant gender differences; in men, higher oleic acid levels were linked to a lower probability of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) progressing to manifest Alzheimer's dementia.
In a separate therapeutic investigation, an international project funded by the Austrian Science Fund is examining the impact of music on memory. Moving beyond passive listening, the four-year study involves researchers from Austria, Norway, and Argentina to investigate how active singing and learning new songs might strengthen neural connections. The study is specifically seeking participants over the age of 65 who have no prior experience with musical performance.
