Alzheimer's research identifies gaps in therapy eligibility and protein mechanisms
New research highlights challenges in treating atypical forms of Alzheimer's disease. A study published in ‘Neurology’ indicates that many patients with atypical symptoms—such as impairments in language, vision, or executive function rather than memory—may not meet the eligibility criteria for current anti-amyloid therapies like Lecanemab and Donanemab.
Dr. Dror Shir of the Mayo Clinic noted that atypical forms are often insufficiently recognized in clinical trials. The study, which examined 184 individuals, found that current treatment criteria may unintentionally exclude patients who are in the early stages of the disease but present with non-memory-centric symptoms.
In related neuroscientific research, studies have explored the role of the Neurofilament Light Chain (NEFL) protein in Alzheimer's progression. Findings suggest that reducing NEFL levels can lead to measurable improvements in cognitive and motor functions, providing further insight into the molecular mechanisms driving neurodegeneration.
