Alzheimer's research: Nasal spray shows promise in protecting neurons

Italian researchers have developed a nasal spray using nanovesicles derived from the amniotic membrane that shows promise in treating Alzheimer's disease. The study, published in ‘Translational Neurodegeneration’, was conducted by scientists from Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, Fondazione Policlinico Universitario A. Gemelli Irccs, and the E. Menni Research Center.

In experimental models, the spray successfully reached the hippocampus, a brain region critical for memory. The treatment was shown to counteract neuroinflammation, protect neuronal function and synapses, and preserve memory. Researchers observed that these extracellular vesicles could potentially both prevent the onset of memory deficits and combat cognitive decline once it has already manifested.

Separately, medical experts are highlighting the shift in Alzheimer's care from diagnosis to prediction. While blood biomarkers are becoming more accessible for clinical use, neurologists note the challenge remains in accurately predicting which individuals with biological markers will progress to dementia and at what speed. In Italy, dementia cases are projected to rise from approximately 1.43 million currently to 2.2 million by 2050.
