Alzheimer's research shows potential in reducing amyloid plaques

A collaborative research effort between Swedish and American institutions has demonstrated progress in targeting Alzheimer's disease by addressing beta-amyloid plaque formation. The study, published in the Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics, focused on a synthetic gamma-secretase modulator known as AZ4126.

In mouse models, AZ4126 was shown to reduce the formation and growth of beta-amyloid plaques. Notably, the compound also appeared to facilitate the regression of some existing plaques. The research involved AlzeCure Pharma, the Karolinska Institutet, the University of Gothenburg, and Washington University.

While the results are significant for understanding how to modify protein accumulation in the brain, researchers clarified that AZ4126 is distinct from ACD680, the current candidate in AlzeCure's Alzstatin platform.
